#1 Don't Memorize Answers

Memorized answers don't give the examiner the accurate measure of your English-language skills.

#2 Don’t use big and unfamiliar words

There is a higher chance of making a mistake by either mispronouncing the words or using them in the wrong context. Mistakes can affect your final band score.

#3 Use a range of grammatical structures.

Know your errors and practice speaking to friends in English, or record yourself to see if you can spot errors. If you hear an error, make sure to correct it yourself.

#4 Don’t worry about your accent

With a face-to-face speaking test, the IELTS examiner understands a wide range of accents. He will be able to understand what you say, unlike an AI machine.

#5 Take a Brief Pause to think

There is no harm in taking a brief pause to think about what you say. You can think about phrases to give you time to think, such as:

  • That’s an interesting question.
  • I have never thought about that, but…
  • Let me see
  • That’s a good point

#6 Avoid Fillers

Avoid Fillers

Eh…, uh…, em…, er…, as they are meaningless and indicate that your struggling to produce language and ideas.

#7 Acknowledge if you still have more time left

If the examiner is pausing and waiting for you to keep speaking, acknowledge that you still have more time left.

Example: "Oh, I still have more time left, let me take you into more details about my hometown."

#8 Use stalling phrases

Example: "What else can I say about that? Well, another thing that I can remember is…"

#9 Use hesitation devices

To show that you can use a wider range of cohesive devices and can think logically.

Examples:

  • Do you think people are giving away their right to privacy when they use smartphone apps?
  • A: Well, let me think… To be honest, I’m not sure whether or not they are giving away their right to privacy. I suppose it depends on the app and what settings a person chooses. For example…
  • Some of the phrases you can use to give yourself some time to think:
  • Well, let me think,
  • Let’s see,
  • It was a long time ago but…,
  • Another thing I remember about it was…,
  • Reminds me about another time that I..

#10 Refer directly to your task card

Read out the prompt, changing the structure as you read it

Example: "And… what did I use it for? Well, that’s interesting, I actually used it for…"
