The latest data has revealed that Canada has nearly one million job vacancies across all sectors.
As per Statistics Canada’s Job Vacancy and Wage Survey report, Job vacancies increased by 4.7% in the 2nd quarter of 2022 from the 1st quarter, while it is 42.3% higher compared to the 2nd quarter of 2021.
Canadian Employers are actively looking to fill 9,97,000 vacant positions.
Job vacancy rate - a ratio of the number of vacant positions and total labour demand (sum of filled positions and vacant positions) is 5.7% in the 2nd quarter, which is an all-time high.
Since the 1st quarter of 2020, growth in labour demand reported (+4.2%) has surpassed growth in payroll employment, i.e. 1.7%, leading to a record number of job vacancies, according to a report.

New Brunswick recorded a decrease in job vacancies (-6.1 to 15200), and the remaining provinces also recorded a slight change in job vacancies.
Vacancies in different sectors:
Job vacancies in social assistance, health care, professional, scientific and technical services remained high.
In the 2nd quarter of 2022, Over half of the vacancies from the sectors mentioned above are from Montreal in Quebec province, some economic regions of Toronto city in Ontario Province, Lower Mainland-Southwest(that includes Vancouver city) in British Columbia (BC) Province.
In the 2nd quarter of 2022, job vacancies in the accommodation and food services sector increased to 12.7%(1,49,600), including occupations like kitchen helpers, food counter attendants, cooks, and food and beverage servers.
The report stated slight changes in job vacancies in retail trade, construction and manufacturing sectors.
The report also found an increase in average hourly wage by 5.3% in all sectors compared to the 2nd quarter of 2021. It presently stands at $24.05 per hour.
