How does the Australia PR Points-based System Work?

The Australian Immigration points calculator is a 65-points-based system that awards points to the applicant based on various factors like his age, educational qualifications, work experience, English language skills, adaptability, and spouse or partner skills.

This points-based system is designed to attract highly skilled foreigners who want to live and work in Australia. This system considers only those applicants who have the right skills and work experience in any of the fields that are in high demand in Australia.

You need to score at least 65 points to be eligible to apply for an Australian permanent residency visa.

However, you may need a higher score depending on the visa category you are applying for and the number of applicants in your occupation.

There are different visa categories under the skilled immigration program through which you can apply for an Australia PR Visa. Among them below are the 3 visa categories for which the Australia PR points calculator is used

  • Subclass 189 visa


The Subclass 189 Visa is for Skilled Independent Workers who want to live and work in Australia permanently and who are not sponsored by an Australian territory or state government, Australian employer, or nominated by a relative.

 To be eligible for a skilled independent visa you need to 

  • Score 65 points on the Australian Skills Assessment points test.
  • Meet the English language requirements (fluency in English)
  • Meet the health and character requirements
     
  • Subclass 190 visa

The skilled nominated (Subclass 190) visa, is a PR visa for skilled foreign workers who are nominated by an Australian territory or state government. To be eligible for this visa:
Your EOI profile must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government.
Must Meet the English language requirements (Language proficiency)
Must have certificates of good health and character.

  • Subclass 491 visa


The Australian skilled work regional (provisional) visa also called subclass 491 visa, is a temporary visa for skilled workers who want to live and work in a designated regional area of Australia for five years. To be eligible for this visa, you must:

  • Be nominated by an Australian territory or state government agency or sponsored by an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area.
  • Meet the good English language,  health and character requirements.

 

How to apply for Australian subclass 189/190/491 visas?

 

To apply for the subclass 189, 190, and 491 visas, you must first create an Expression of Interest (EOI) profile in SkillSelect. SkillSelect is an online system that helps licensed Australian employers find skilled foreign workers. Once you have created your EOI profile, you will be ranked against other applicants based on your points score.

Common steps in the subclass 189/application process:
 

  • Create an EOI profile in SkillSelect (the Australian Government’s online application system).
  • Get your skills assessed by an approved Australian assessing authority.
  • Must meet the good health, character and English language requirements.
  • If you are applying for the subclass 190 or 491 visa, you must get nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible family member residing in a designated regional area.
  • Receive an invitation to apply(ITA) for the visa.
  • Submit a visa application and pay the visa application fee.
  • Provide police clearance certificates(PCC) and undergo a medical examination.
  • Have your visa application processed.
